Course Description: This course is designed to explore several dimensions of the health care professions. The student will be introduced to a variety of health care careers through the exploration of health care career pathways. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic health care skills including measurement of vital signs, CPR, first aid, and common medical terminology. Students will explore the comprehensive health education and human reproduction curriculum established by SC state standards.

Class Expectations: Students are expected to fully engage in this learning experience through regular class attendance, participation in all class activities, completion of all assignments, and proficiency in required health care skills and procedures. Students are expected to adhere to the policies and procedures in the Beaufort County Schools Code of Conduct

Grading: The Beaufort County School District grading scale will be used in conjunction with a point system to evaluate students based on the following course requirements:

Come to class on time. The school policy on tardies is 1st you receive verbal warning, 2nd parent called, 3rd referral issued and an unexcused absence declared.

Attend to personal needs before coming to class. The 15 minute rule does apply, exits are limited, and agenda book is required as hall pass for emergencies.
Remain in your seat unless you have permission to get up.
No food or drinks (water is the only exception).
Bring required material daily.

The course will provide an overview of the physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and language development of the young child. Students will learn practical techniques to guide children to facilitate their academic and personal development. Emphasis will be placed on identifying and developing appropriate skills and behaviors of successful early childhood educators. Students will investigate early childhood education programs (post secondary) and identify similarities and differences among them. Students will have the opportunity to apply these fundamental concepts through an early childhood practicum during the second half of the semester.

Exams: Students will be evaluated through periodic exams including a final exam. Senior students maintaining a 92% or higher average will be exempt from the final exam. Each exam covers information from the text, class lectures and discussions, journal articles, handouts, and media. Any information gathered from class exercises may also be on the exam.

Course Notebook: Each student is required to keep a course notebook containing evidence of achieving course competencies. The notebook should be organized with dividers such as notes, handouts, assignments and projects. The notebook must have an introduction sheet, table of contents, course syllabus and labeled sections.

Developmental/Early Childhood Theorist/Influential Person Project: Students will research and prepare a report on a selected person from the list below. Students must have at least 3 resources (1 from a professional journal, 1 from the internet, and 1 from a book). The report will be delivered in a class presentation and should include a typed fact sheet to hand out to the class with important information about the selected person. The presentation should also include a visual aid that demonstrates one or more of the concepts of the selected person.
